GREENVILLE, South Carolina — Storms are not waiting for anyone tonight.
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued at 6:18 PM EDT on Wednesday, August 5, covering Transylvania County in North Carolina and Greenville, Oconee, and Pickens Counties in South Carolina. The warning remains in effect until 7:15 PM EDT.
That gives affected residents a narrow window to get safe.
What the Radar Is Showing Right Now
Radar imagery is tracking intense storm cores moving southeast through the warned area — from near the Nantahala National Forest in Transylvania County down through Greenville and toward Anderson, South Carolina.
The strongest storm activity is concentrated right along the North Carolina–South Carolina border, and it is moving fast.
60 MPH Winds and Hail Are the Main Threats
The National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg has detected signatures consistent with 60 mph wind gusts and hail up to three-quarter inch in diameter.
That combination is serious. Winds at that speed can bring down tree limbs and cause minor structural damage. Hail that size can dent vehicles and destroy gardens or crops within minutes.
Nearby communities — including Anderson, Spartanburg, and Brevard — should also stay on alert. If the storm holds its intensity, additional warnings could follow.
What You Should Do Before 7:15 PM
Do not wait to see how bad it gets. If you are in Transylvania, Greenville, Oconee, or Pickens County right now, move indoors.
Stay away from windows. Bring in anything loose outside — furniture, planters, trash bins. Avoid driving through the warned area if possible.
The warning expires at 7:15 PM EDT, but conditions can change quickly. Keep watching local alerts until the storm fully passes.
