One person is dead and three others are hospitalized after an 87-year-old driver ran a red light and struck pedestrians in downtown Nashville, police say.
Thomas Cahill, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was driving a Ford Fusion when he ran the red light at the 4th and Broadway intersection. The crash happened while pedestrians were legally crossing — cameras confirmed they had the right of way.
The Victims
The person killed was identified as Timothy Wedlock, 58, of Australia. He was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital.
Three others were also injured:
- A man from Jacksonville, Florida, is in critical condition and underwent surgery
- A woman from Knoxville is in serious but non-critical condition
- A 58-year-old woman from Parsons, Tennessee, is in critical yet stable condition at Vanderbilt
The Driver
Cahill was traveling with his 90-year-old wife and her caregiver at the time of the crash. Both Cahill and his wife were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said Cahill did not show signs of impairment. Investigators are still working to determine what caused him to run the red light.
The caregiver, who was in the backseat on the phone, said she looked up only after hearing pedestrians being struck.
City Responds
Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell addressed the crash, calling it an “incredibly tragic event.”
Downtown surveillance cameras captured the moment of impact and are being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
Where Things Stand
No charges have been announced as of now. The investigation remains active.
