On the morning of April 30, 2024, Gloria Hymes and her 4-year-old daughter Zekani Hymes-Wilson were walking to a nearby Domino’s to pick up food near their Milwaukee apartment. They never made it back.
A black Chevrolet Impala traveling at high speed slammed into the mother and daughter, sending them both flying into the road. Surveillance video captured the entire collision.
The driver was Donald Crayton, 33 — Gloria’s own live-in boyfriend.
He Stopped, Then Left
After the crash, Crayton and his sister parked the car and ran back toward the victims. Within about a minute, Crayton turned around, got back in the Impala, and drove away — leaving a mortally wounded 4-year-old and her injured mother lying in the street.
A police officer arrived and attempted to revive Zekani at the scene. She was declared dead shortly after.
Gloria survived but suffered multiple fractures to her right leg. It was she who identified Crayton to police as the driver — her own boyfriend.
A Troubled History Behind the Wheel
Crayton had never been issued a driver’s license. He had been convicted of killing someone while driving in 2019, serving only 10 months in jail. He was convicted twice for driving without a license in 2017 and 2023.
When he expressed remorse during Thursday’s sentencing, the judge wasn’t buying it. Milwaukee Circuit Court Judge Laura Crivello told him directly — he had said the same things at his 2019 sentencing and changed nothing.
The Sentence
Donald Crayton pleaded guilty to reckless homicide, hit-and-run involving death, and hit-and-run involving great bodily harm. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison and ordered to never drive again.
