A 65-year-old Michigan man is facing murder charges after authorities said he confessed to killing his wife inside their home, allegedly stopping her from calling for help through a voice-activated assistant.
Rodney Olmsted is currently held at the Allegan County Jail in connection with the death of his 58-year-old wife, Rosa Mercedes Olmsted. According to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the couple’s home in Valley Township for a welfare check on July 23 after family and neighbors grew concerned. Rosa’s son told officers he had not spoken to his mother since July 16, while a neighbor said she had not been seen since July 5. Her employer confirmed she had missed work since July 20.
Neighbors reportedly told investigators that Rodney had a history of aggressive behavior toward his wife. During the first welfare check, no one answered the door, though neighbors said they heard footsteps inside. The following day, deputies returned and forced entry after noticing blood on a wall and debris scattered on the floor.
Inside, officers said they found Rodney injured, having reportedly harmed himself. In the basement, they discovered Rosa’s body, partially covered, with visible signs of a violent struggle in the room.
Authorities said Rodney later admitted to attacking his wife, stating he feared she might use a smart device in the home to call for emergency help during the assault. A medical examiner’s report indicated she had likely died more than a day before she was found.
Rodney was treated for his injuries before being formally arrested and charged with open murder. He remains in custody on a $500,000 cash bond, with his next court hearing scheduled for August 6.
