BOONE, Iowa — A fast-moving kitchen fire sent smoke pouring from the roof of a local eatery Wednesday evening, prompting an emergency response and raising questions about what really happened inside before crews arrived.
According to officials, the call came in around 4:53 p.m. Wednesday for a reported fire at the intersection of 11th Street and Story Street, with initial reports suggesting people may still have been trapped inside the building. Emergency crews mobilized immediately, with a fire engine and several firefighters reaching the location in just about four minutes — a response time officials say was critical given the uncertainty about occupants.
Upon arrival, firefighters spotted smoke rising from the roof of the Whistle Stop Cafe, a restaurant situated at 1102 Story Street. Crews forced entry into the building and traced the source to a fire that had broken out inside the kitchen. Before firefighters even reached the flames, a quick-thinking staff member had already stepped in, grabbing a nearby fire extinguisher and managing to contain the blaze before it could spread further through the restaurant.
