Several communities across Barbour County were hit hard by flash flooding on Saturday, leaving homes damaged, roads washed out, and residents stranded as rising waters cut off escape routes.
The areas of Arden, Clemtown, Moatsville, and surrounding communities took the brunt of the storm. The flooding caused significant damage to homes, roadways, and bridges — and knocked out water service for many residents still waiting for it to be restored.
Residents Trapped, Rescued by Emergency Crews
As water levels rapidly rose, multiple residents became trapped inside their homes and could not get out on their own. Emergency units from Philippi, Belington, and Junior were dispatched beginning at approximately 3:46 P.M., arriving with UTVs and boats to reach those stranded.
Crews successfully evacuated three residents from their homes. Operations continued on scene until around 9:08 P.M., when water levels had receded enough for crews to stand down safely.
Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including Philippi, Belington, Junior, Nutter Fort, and Grafton Volunteer Fire Departments, along with Barbour County EMS and the Barbour County Sheriff’s Department.
Supply Distribution Now Active
For residents affected by the flooding, supplies are currently being distributed at the Arden Area Community Center, located at 3923 Arden Rd, Philippi, WV 26416. Distribution will continue through the evening.
Items available include water, nonperishable food, cleaning buckets, bleach, trash bags, gloves, sponges, and baby wipes.
Residents and volunteers wishing to donate can drop off the following most-needed items: water, nonperishable snack food, baby wipes, disposable gloves, and heavy-duty trash bags.
Roads Still Dangerous
Officials are urging anyone traveling through the affected areas to use extreme caution. Highway crews are actively working to restore damaged roadways, and water service restoration efforts are ongoing throughout the county.
Residents are asked to avoid unnecessary travel in flooded or recently flooded areas until conditions are confirmed safe.
