A Florida court has handed down a life sentence to a man found guilty of killing his girlfriend’s elderly mother inside her own senior living residence, just hours after she had celebrated her birthday surrounded by family.
Javier Rosado Martinez, 58, was found guilty of first-degree murder in connection with the March 2022 death of 93-year-old Dolores Padilla-Marrero. On Tuesday, a judge sentenced him to life behind bars with no chance of parole.
The Orange County State Attorney’s Office said the case was rooted in a deep betrayal of trust. In an official statement, State Attorney Monique Worrell said the victim had welcomed someone into her life who ended up responsible for her brutal death, adding that the sentencing represented justice for her family and for anyone who has lost a loved one to violence at the hands of someone they once trusted.
Prosecutors had initially pushed for the death penalty, but the jury ultimately returned a recommendation of life imprisonment instead. Worrell also praised the resilience shown by Padilla-Marrero’s relatives throughout the lengthy legal proceedings.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the scene on March 14, 2022, after the victim was discovered unresponsive inside her assisted living apartment on Alafaya Trail. Sheriff John Mina, addressing reporters shortly after the arrest, called the killing a heinous and tragic act, extending condolences to the woman’s family.
Investigators say the timeline leading up to her death began the previous evening, when Padilla-Marrero’s daughter dropped her off at the facility around 8 p.m. Later that night, the daughter attempted to reach her mother by text to talk about shopping for clothing, but received no response — unusual behavior for the victim. Concerned, the daughter and her husband returned to the facility the next morning, where they made the grim discovery.
Court documents describe the scene: the elderly woman was found on her bed, unclothed, with a pillow placed over her face and a blanket covering part of her body. Sheriff’s officials said the suspect had tried unsuccessfully to enter the secured residential building alone before another resident let him inside.
Sheriff Mina noted that the woman had personally gone out of her way to help the man who ultimately killed her.
Sergeant Joe Covelli of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office explained that the case initially raised red flags because deaths inside senior care facilities are typically attributed to natural causes. However, deputies responding to the scene noticed several suspicious details that prompted a full investigation.
An autopsy conducted the following day determined the cause of death to be a combination of strangulation and blunt force trauma to the chest, which resulted in broken ribs. The manner of death was officially ruled a homicide.
Covelli said investigators treated the scene as a potential homicide from the outset — a decision that paid off when a piece of jewelry was recovered nearby. Only a portion of a necklace was found: a small pendant shaped like a horn, separated from its chain, which authorities displayed during the press briefing.
According to sheriff’s officials, the pendant became a critical piece of evidence. Investigators said the item was linked to Martinez through his on-again, off-again relationship with one of the victim’s other daughters, who reportedly identified the accessory as one he always wore. The pendant was recovered wrapped inside a shirt found next to the victim’s body.
Authorities said additional evidence — including surveillance footage, DNA analysis, and the defendant’s distinctive physical build (5 feet 5 inches tall and roughly 290 pounds) — further strengthened the case, though officials declined to disclose full details publicly.
Sergeant Covelli reflected on the emotional weight of the case, noting that everyone has parents or grandparents, and that no one should meet such an end after a lifetime lived.
When questioned by investigators, Martinez reportedly claimed he could not recall the events of that night, stating that he had “blacked out.”
