Nibley, Utah — A Utah couple has pleaded guilty to felony charges stemming from the death of their 18-month-old daughter after prosecutors alleged the toddler endured prolonged neglect inside the family’s home before she died in March 2025.
According to court records, Mitchell Chesnut Murray, 31, and Carrie Marie Murray, 32, admitted guilt on reduced charges after originally being charged with aggravated murder and aggravated child abuse in connection with the death of Ruby Marie Murray.
Authorities say the case began with a disturbing 911 call placed by the child’s mother.
911 Call Sparked Investigation Into Toddler’s Death
According to court records cited by multiple local media outlets, Carrie Murray, who worked as a nurse, called emergency services on March 19, 2025, and reported that her daughter was “beyond help.”
Investigators allege she did not perform lifesaving measures before emergency responders arrived at the home.
The call immediately triggered an investigation by law enforcement and child welfare authorities into the circumstances surrounding Ruby’s death.
Officials later alleged the toddler had suffered severe neglect leading up to her death.
Security Footage Detailed Child’s Final Days
Investigators reviewed security camera footage and baby monitor recordings, which they say documented the toddler’s final days inside the home.
According to court documents, Ruby was outside her crib for only about six hours during the final four days of her life.
Authorities also alleged another person was physically present with the child for only around 50 minutes during that same period.
Court records further state that throughout her final night, Ruby could be heard crying, whimpering and gasping on security recordings.
Investigators reported finding old food scraps inside the crib, while the child’s room was allegedly much warmer than the rest of the house because of a space heater.
Parents Plead Guilty to Reduced Charges
Mitchell and Carrie Murray were arrested in December 2025 on charges that included aggravated murder and aggravated child abuse.
However, according to court records, both parents pleaded guilty on July 2 to child abuse homicide and aggravated child abuse.
The plea resolves the criminal case without a trial, although sentencing has not yet taken place.
The couple is scheduled to appear in court for sentencing in September, the same month Ruby would have celebrated another birthday.
Family Remembered Ruby as a Happy Child
Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding her death, Ruby’s online obituary described her as a joyful toddler who brought happiness to those around her.

“She was a sweet and curious little one, whose laughter and smile lit up every room.”
The obituary also shared that one of Ruby’s favorite lullabies was Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” adding another emotional detail as the family prepares for sentencing later this year.
The guilty pleas resolve the criminal allegations, but the court will ultimately determine the parents’ sentences during the upcoming hearing in September.
