Deaf California Woman Loses 3 Dogs Including Her Lifeline Service Dog After Truck Strikes Them on Walk

Roseville, California — A routine walk turned into an unimaginable tragedy for a California woman after a truck struck her and her four dogs, leaving three of the animals dead, including the service dog she relied on every day to safely navigate life as a deaf individual.

Linda Sekany, of Roseville, said the devastating crash has changed her life forever, leaving her grieving the loss of companions she considered family while also facing the difficult journey of replacing the service dog she depended on for years.

The accident occurred on July 1, according to a fundraiser created by friends to support Sekany and her remaining dog.

Truck Allegedly Pulled Into Crosswalk as Family Was Crossing

Speaking about the crash, Sekany recalled believing the truck had stopped to allow her and her dogs to safely cross the street.

Instead, she said the vehicle suddenly accelerated toward them.

“I looked at this truck. He was stopped, and I’m like, ‘Good. He’s waiting for us to cross, which is the appropriate thing to do,’” Sekany said. “The next thing I know, he pulled out and just ran over us.”

Sekany said she was thrown approximately five to six feet during the collision but survived without major physical injuries.

The truck driver reportedly remained at the scene and cooperated with first responders. Authorities have not publicly identified the driver, and it remains unclear whether the crash investigation is still ongoing.

Service Dog’s Death Leaves Huge Void

Among the dogs killed was Jersey, Sekany’s highly trained service dog.

The dog suffered a crushed pelvis in the collision, and Sekany ultimately made the heartbreaking decision to have Jersey euthanized.

She described Jersey as far more than a pet.

“They are my life,” Sekany said. “I live my life for these dogs. In one fell swoop, my family is gone.”

She also explained that Jersey was her “ability to function in the world,” helping her recognize alarms, warning sounds and other situations she could not hear.

Sekany said obtaining a trained service dog required years of waiting and preparation, leaving her uncertain about how to begin the process again.

Three Dogs Lost, One Still Recovering

Another dog, Dugan, reportedly suffered cardiac arrest at the scene and died shortly after the crash.

A third dog, Lafter, initially survived but later became seriously ill due to injuries and trauma sustained during the incident. Despite receiving medical care, Lafter later died.

Only one dog, Karat, survived the collision.

Friends say Karat continues recovering while Sekany copes with overwhelming grief and mounting veterinary expenses.

Community Rallies Around Grieving Dog Owner

Following the tragedy, friends launched a fundraising campaign to support Karat’s recovery and help Sekany obtain a new service dog.

According to the fundraiser, Sekany has spent years volunteering with a national service dog organization and with Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue, dedicating countless hours to helping both people and animals.

The fundraiser describes her as someone who has always put others before herself.

“Anyone who knows Linda knows that she would never ask for help,” the campaign states. “She is the first person to show up for others and the last person to think of herself.”

As of July 13, the fundraiser had raised more than $60,000, surpassing its original $50,000 goal, reflecting the widespread community support for Sekany as she mourns the loss of the dogs that meant everything to her.
