A two-year-old girl in Hallandale Beach, Florida, lost her life after being left unattended inside a vehicle for more than three hours as temperatures soared into the low 90s, with a heat index exceeding 100 degrees, according to local police.
The toddler, identified as Brittany Nicole, was found unresponsive inside the car and rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not made any arrests so far, and the case has been forwarded to the state attorney’s office, which will decide whether criminal charges will be filed.
According to a family friend who set up a fundraiser to support the grieving family, the sequence of events began when the child’s mother dropped her off with a babysitter before heading to work. The babysitter reportedly handed the child over to her own father — a man who suffers from dementia — to look after temporarily.
The elderly man allegedly drove the toddler to a residence on NW 7th Avenue but failed to remove her from the vehicle after arriving. Brittany was left inside the sweltering car from approximately 9:30 in the morning until 1 p.m., when she was discovered unconscious.
Police later reached out to the child’s mother, Cristina Lopez, while she was at work to deliver the devastating news that her daughter had died while under the care of the babysitter’s family.
Lopez, overwhelmed with grief, has publicly appealed for accountability, stating she simply wants justice for her daughter.
The state attorney’s office is expected to review the circumstances of the case to determine whether negligence charges will be pursued against those responsible for the child’s care that day.
