A San Francisco resident has been missing since Tuesday, prompting an urgent search by his husband and close friends who fear something has gone wrong.
Gabriel Angelo Carreon was reportedly last spotted Tuesday morning in the city’s Castro neighborhood, according to his husband, Ryan Mahaffey. Carreon had told loved ones he was heading out to catch a movie that day, a detail later confirmed through information shared with the San Francisco Police Department.
Hours passed with no word from him, and by Tuesday afternoon, alarm bells went off for Mahaffey when Carreon failed to show up to a scheduled doctor’s appointment.
Since then, Mahaffey says he has personally contacted roughly 20 hotels across the city and reached out to multiple hospitals in an attempt to track down his husband. Fearing a worst-case scenario involving immigration enforcement, he also consulted an attorney friend who specializes in immigration cases to rule out the possibility that Carreon had been detained by ICE. Mahaffey clarified that Carreon holds legal permanent residency status with a green card and, based on what he’s learned so far, does not appear to be in ICE custody.
With official leads limited, the search has shifted to the community. Friends have set up a dedicated Facebook page and are distributing missing-person flyers throughout the neighborhood in hopes that someone recognizes him.
John Shinogle, a close friend of the couple who served as best man at their wedding last year, described Carreon’s appearance in detail to help identify him: standing about 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds, currently sporting pink hair, and last seen wearing a backpack along with what may have been a red baseball cap. He was believed to be walking toward the Castro Muni station at the time.
Shinogle noted that Carreon is well known locally for his involvement in neighborhood sports leagues and community organizations, which has helped mobilize a wider circle of people into the search effort.
For now, those closest to him say their only focus is bringing him home safely.
“We love you and we want to bring you home safely and we’re working tirelessly to do so,” Shinogle said.
Anyone with information on Carreon’s whereabouts is urged to contact the San Francisco Police Department directly, or reach out through the number 650-701-3540. Updates are also being posted to the family-run Facebook page dedicated to the search.
