Sacramento, California — Thousands of California drivers are being asked to return to the Department of Motor Vehicles after officials identified unexplained “anomalies” in certain written driver’s license tests, a move that could result in the cancellation of nearly 11,000 driver’s licenses if affected individuals fail to retake the exam within the required timeframe.
The California DMV has already begun mailing notices to impacted drivers, informing them that they must complete another written knowledge test within 30 days to keep their licenses valid.

Some said DMV employees could not explain why they had been selected for another written exam but encouraged them to simply complete the process.
DMV Says Issue Is Not Connected to AI
The notices come shortly after California announced a partnership to expand the use of Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude, across state agencies.
However, the DMV stressed that the two issues are unrelated.
According to the agency, the retesting requirement resulted from its regular internal monitoring process and was not caused by artificial intelligence or a technical malfunction.
Officials explained that the state’s use of Claude is focused on improving customer service and reducing wait times rather than administering driver’s license examinations.
