Far Rockaway, New York — A 26-year-old man has been arrested after police say he fatally stabbed his retired corrections officer mother inside their Queens home in what authorities are investigating as a domestic violence homicide.
According to the New York Police Department, officers responded to a residence on Nameoke Avenue in Far Rockaway at approximately 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, where they discovered 61-year-old Joanne Crawford suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
Police later arrested Armel Crawford, 26, and charged him with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the fatal stabbing.
Police Arrest Son Hours After Fatal Stabbing
Authorities said Armel Crawford was taken into custody Tuesday evening following the deadly incident.
The NYPD has not publicly discussed what may have immediately led to the stabbing or released additional details about the investigation.
Officials also have not confirmed the relationship between the suspect and the victim, though relatives identified Joanne Crawford as Armel’s mother.
The case remains under active investigation as detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing family members.
Family Describes Longstanding Tension at Home
Speaking outside the residence, Joanne Crawford’s first cousin, Barry Crawford, said the mother and son had experienced ongoing difficulties over the years.
According to Barry, Armel reportedly struggled with the amount of time his mother spent away from home during her career as a corrections officer.
He said Armel believed he had missed out on important moments with his mother while growing up because of her demanding work schedule.
Barry also claimed that a recent disagreement centered around Joanne’s decision to stop allowing her son to care for his grandmother because she felt he was being disrespectful.
“He never was a troubled kid outside; he just had problems with her. I think his biggest problem with her is that she worked for corrections, she was a retired corrections officer, so she was never home … he felt that she never gave him the quality time that he desired,” Barry said.
Authorities have not confirmed whether those family statements are connected to the alleged motive in the case.
Loved Ones Remember Joanne Crawford
Family members described Joanne Crawford as a caring and generous woman who devoted herself to helping others throughout her life.
Barry Crawford said learning about her death left him devastated.
“Her father and my mother are brothers and sisters. We’ve been close since we were little kids. I’ll love her and miss her forever. I’ll never understand this tragedy or what has happened,” he said.
He also remembered Joanne as someone who always put family and community first.
“This tragedy will never be understood by this family because of who she is. She did everything for everyone who came in contact with her. Anyone who knew Joanne Crawford knew she was a loving person.”
Investigation Continues
Police have not released additional information about the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing or whether there were previous domestic incidents at the home.
Armel Crawford remains charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon, and the criminal case is expected to proceed through the New York court system.
As investigators continue reviewing evidence, loved ones are mourning the loss of a woman they say dedicated her life to serving both her family and her community.
