Mauckport, Indiana — A southern Indiana man is facing a murder charge after authorities say his wife was fatally shot inside their home during what he described as an accidental shooting, though investigators allege the circumstances warrant criminal charges.
According to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, 32-year-old Stephen Ray Lang was arrested Thursday night following the death of his wife, Sara M. Lang, at the family’s residence on Hillcrest Drive in Mauckport, about 140 miles south of Indianapolis.
Authorities have charged Lang with murder, domestic battery, intimidation, and pointing a firearm in connection with the deadly incident.
911 Call Reported an ‘Accidental Gunshot’
Deputies responded to the home shortly before 10 p.m. after Lang called 911 to report what he described as an “accidental gunshot.”
When first responders arrived, they found Sara Lang suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Despite emergency efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later identified a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun as the weapon used in the shooting. Officials have not publicly detailed the evidence that led them to file a murder charge despite Lang’s claim that the shooting was accidental.
Children Were Inside the Home During the Shooting
Authorities said two children—a 14-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl—were inside the residence when the fatal shooting occurred.
Additional details about the moments leading up to the incident emerged through interviews with Lang’s relatives.
According to Lang’s sister, Sarah Shireman, the shooting happened after an argument between Sara Lang and the couple’s teenage son.
Shireman told local media that her brother stepped into the dispute while carrying a handgun.
She said she believed he was attempting to stop the argument, although she acknowledged that his actions had terrifying consequences.
Sister Says Suspect Had History of Pulling Out a Gun
Shireman also claimed her brother had a pattern of displaying firearms during heated arguments.
“With all the bickering going back and forth, I think he was literally just trying to get them to be quiet, and everybody just calm down,” Shireman said.
She further described a previous confrontation involving her brother.
“He pulled it out because he thinks he was hot stuff,” she said. “I will admit he acted like he was going to do something with me and him when we got into a fight a couple months ago, but it didn’t work out for him.”
Despite those allegations, Shireman said she does not believe her brother intentionally killed his wife.
“My brother is not a killer. My brother is the sweetest. He is the sweetest person ever and would do anything to help anybody.”
Investigation Into Deadly Shooting Continues
Lang’s father also commented on the tragedy, reportedly describing it as “a simple, little, stupid argument that got out of hand.”
Authorities have not released additional information about what occurred immediately before the fatal gunshot or whether any additional evidence was recovered from the scene.
The Harrison County Coroner’s Office is expected to conduct an autopsy as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding Sara Lang’s death.
Meanwhile, Lang remains in custody as the criminal case moves forward.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not announced whether additional charges or court filings are expected.
