Paramus, New Jersey — A New Jersey middle school has recalled its recently distributed yearbooks after administrators discovered that an image of Adolf Hitler had been included in the publication’s baby picture section, prompting an investigation by both school officials and local law enforcement.
The incident has sparked concern among parents and community leaders as school officials work to determine how the image made it into the final publication despite the yearbook review process.
School Quickly Pulls Yearbooks After Discovery
The issue came to light after students had already received their yearbooks.
In a letter sent to parents on June 25, East Brook Middle School Principal Ryan Aupperlee said administrators learned that a baby photo included in the yearbook had later been identified as an image of Adolf Hitler.
School officials immediately began collecting the books to prevent further distribution.
“Earlier today, after students had already received their yearbooks, we learned that the baby pictures section of the yearbook contained an image that was later identified as an infant photograph of Adolf Hitler.”
Aupperlee said the school acted quickly once the issue was identified to remove the publication from circulation.
Principal Calls Inclusion ‘Unacceptable’
In his letter, Aupperlee strongly condemned the appearance of the image and emphasized that it does not reflect the school’s values.
He acknowledged that some readers may not have immediately recognized the historical figure but said that did not lessen the seriousness of the situation.
“I want to be direct with you: the presence of this image is unacceptable.”
The principal also highlighted the significance of Adolf Hitler’s role in history and why such an image has no place in a school publication.
“Adolf Hitler represents hatred, antisemitism, and the horrors of the Holocaust, including the murder of six million Jews. An image of him has no place in a yearbook created for our students.”
He added that the school condemns the image’s inclusion without reservation.
Investigation Underway Into How Photo Was Included
Officials have not yet determined how the image was submitted or who was responsible for its inclusion.
It also remains unclear how the photograph passed through the editing and review process before the yearbooks were printed and distributed.
The school district has launched an internal review while local law enforcement is also investigating the incident.
Authorities are expected to examine the submission and approval process before deciding on any additional actions.
Community Leaders Respond
The incident also drew a response from Paramus Mayor Chris DiPiazza, who said he had been in contact with both school officials and local police.
In a public statement, the mayor stressed that the yearbook incident does not represent the values of the community.
“Our borough’s strength has always been because we are a town welcoming to all faiths and home to numerous houses of worship. Any examples, like yesterday’s, does not reflect Paramus.”
School officials also acknowledged another challenge created by the recall.
Many yearbooks had already been signed by classmates and teachers before they were collected, and administrators said they are exploring ways to preserve those personal messages while correcting the publication.
School Pledges to Make Things Right
As the investigation continues, school leaders say they remain committed to ensuring the publication reflects the values of respect, inclusion, and dignity.
Administrators thanked families for their patience and understanding while they determine how to replace or revise the recalled yearbooks.
The district is expected to announce additional steps after completing its investigation into how the image was approved for publication.
