Flint Township, Michigan — Two Michigan parents are facing serious criminal charges after prosecutors alleged years of neglect contributed to the death of their 7-year-old son, whose medical condition and lack of healthcare have become central to the investigation.
Authorities say Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, were arrested following an investigation into the death of their son, Casper Jacob Shane O’Brien, who died after being taken to a local hospital in November 2025.
The couple has each been charged with second-degree murder, among other offenses, and remains in custody without bond.
Child Died After Medical Emergency at Home
According to investigators, officers with the Flint Township Police Department responded to the family’s home on Nov. 4, 2025, after receiving a report of a child in medical distress.
Casper was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities said an autopsy determined the cause of death was dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease that weakens and enlarges the heart muscle. Medical experts note the condition can have multiple causes, including severe obesity in some cases.
Investigators said Casper stood just over 4 feet tall and weighed approximately 255 pounds at the time of his death.
Prosecutors Allege Years of Medical Neglect
During a news conference, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton described the allegations as an extreme case of neglect.
According to prosecutors, Casper reportedly had no regular pediatrician and had been taken to a doctor only once during his life.
“On the face of it, this is cruel and extreme suffering from this child caused by the neglect of the parents,” Leyton said.
Authorities also stated that the family had health insurance through the father’s employment, making medical care available.
Prosecutors further alleged that on the morning Casper died, the parents contacted a veterinarian to seek treatment for their dog.
Those allegations form part of the prosecution’s case and have not yet been tested in court.
Authorities Say Family Was Largely Unknown to Agencies
Investigators also revealed that the couple has a younger daughter who is five years old.
According to the prosecutor, the children had little interaction with government agencies, and child protective services had never previously visited the home.
“None of these kids even existed in the eyes of the government,” Leyton said. “Nobody knew about these kids.”
Authorities have not released additional information regarding the current status of the younger child.
Parents Await Court Appearance
Damien and Jessica O’Brien remain in the Genesee County Jail without bond.

They are scheduled to return to court on July 2, where the criminal proceedings will continue.
As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

His obituary describes him as:
“A bright, loving young boy whose joyful spirit touched everyone around him.”
