Katy, Texas — A 76-year-old woman was killed after a Tesla crashed through her home in a Houston-area neighborhood, prompting a federal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
Authorities said the crash occurred Friday evening in Katy, a suburb west of Houston, when a Tesla Model 3 left the roadway and slammed into a residential property at a high rate of speed.
The collision claimed the life of a longtime resident and has renewed attention on Tesla’s driver-assistance technology and ongoing safety concerns surrounding autonomous driving features.
Woman Killed Inside Her Home
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened at approximately 8 p.m. when a Tesla driven by Michael Butler was traveling east through a neighborhood before crashing into a brick home.
Inside the residence was 76-year-old Martha Avila, who suffered critical injuries when the vehicle entered the home.
Emergency responders airlifted Avila to a nearby hospital, but she later died from her injuries. Authorities said Butler was also injured in the collision and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators noted that the driver remained cooperative throughout the initial investigation and showed no signs of intoxication.
Driver Says Vehicle Was Using Self-Driving Technology
According to law enforcement officials, Butler told investigators that the Tesla was operating in a self-driving mode when the crash occurred.
Authorities have not yet confirmed which specific driving-assistance feature was active at the time of the incident.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office stated that the vehicle appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed before crashing into the residence.
Tesla has not publicly commented on the incident.

Jennifer Carson, who lives nearby, said she was at home watching a movie when she suddenly heard the impact.
“It sounded like thunder,” she said.
Security footage from the neighborhood reportedly captured the Tesla traveling through the subdivision moments before the collision.
Carson said she was surprised by the speed at which the vehicle appeared to be moving.
“I don’t know how someone could have gotten as fast as they did.”
Neighbors described Avila as a beloved longtime resident who had lived in the area for years. One community member reportedly referred to her as a second mother.
