Inglewood, California — A young stadium employee who had just begun a new job at SoFi Stadium has died after being struck by a vehicle while walking home following a FIFA World Cup match, leaving his family mourning a devastating loss and calling for accountability.
Authorities say Aaron Avery, 22, was hit by a vehicle around 10:30 p.m. Monday near Van Ness Avenue after working the Iran vs. New Zealand FIFA World Cup match. According to family members, it was only his second day on the job.
The tragedy has shaken loved ones who describe Avery as a caring young man whose life was cut short just as new opportunities were beginning to unfold.
Family Says Crash Happened After Match Ended
According to relatives, Avery was walking home from SoFi Stadium after completing his shift when he was struck by a vehicle.
His aunt, Norma Quinn, said the loss has been overwhelming for the family.
“This is a very devastating moment for my family,” Quinn said.
“He was my sister’s baby. It’s very devastating.”
Family members said they were informed that speed may have contributed to the crash and that the driver was suspected of being under the influence.
“From what I was told, it was a strong possibility that speed played a part in it, and the guy was under the influence,” Quinn said.
Authorities have not publicly released complete details regarding the ongoing investigation.
Family Rejects Driver’s Explanation
According to relatives, the driver allegedly claimed he could not see Avery because it was nighttime and the victim was wearing dark clothing.
The explanation has angered family members, who say no excuse can justify the fatal collision.
“You say you didn’t see my brother walking because he had on all black,” Avery’s sister, Monique Yates said.
“It don’t matter what color he had on. That can’t be an excuse on why you hit somebody.”
The family hopes investigators fully examine the circumstances surrounding the crash and hold those responsible accountable.
Young Worker Fought for His Life
Following the collision, Avery was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.
According to information shared by the family, he suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and was placed on life support as doctors attempted to save him.
A fundraising campaign created to help with medical expenses and funeral costs states that Avery battled for his life before ultimately succumbing to his injuries.
He was pronounced dead the following day.
The tragedy has created significant emotional and financial challenges for the family, which has turned to community support during this difficult time.

Organ Donation Creates Lasting Legacy
Despite the heartbreaking loss, Avery’s family found comfort in knowing that his final act could help save others.
According to relatives, Avery became an organ donor before his passing.
His donated heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys may help save or improve the lives of as many as eight people, creating a lasting legacy from an otherwise devastating tragedy.
Family members said they are proud of that decision and hope it brings some good from an unimaginable loss.
Family Calls for Justice
As they grieve, Avery’s loved ones continue to seek answers and accountability.
The family said the driver involved in the crash was arrested and hopes the legal process will provide justice for Aaron.
“I just hope my nephew gets justice,” Quinn said.
For those who knew him, Avery will be remembered not only as a hardworking young man beginning a new chapter in life, but also as someone whose generosity may continue helping others long after his passing.
