Dedham, Massachusetts — An 86-year-old man is recovering after being attacked by several unleashed dogs during what was supposed to be a routine morning walk near his senior living community.
The frightening incident occurred on June 18 along a walking trail near the NewBridge on the Charles senior living community in Dedham, leaving the victim with multiple injuries and raising concerns about public safety and responsible pet ownership.
Authorities are now searching for the dogs and their owners after they allegedly left the scene before providing any information.
Morning Walk Turns Into Terrifying Encounter
According to Dedham Animal Control, Michael Roberts was walking on a trail around 9 a.m. when he encountered three dogs that were not on leashes.
The animals reportedly included two white dogs and a boxer, all described as medium-sized.
Officials said the dogs were accompanied by three women believed to be in their 20s or 30s. What began as a normal walk quickly turned into a terrifying struggle.
“I was stunned to say the least because it was really terrifying,” Roberts said.
“To be knocked down by a big dog and then by being bitten is my worst nightmare.”
Roberts said one of the dogs suddenly charged toward him, causing him to fall to the ground before the attack escalated.
Victim Suffers Multiple Bite Injuries
According to reports, Roberts sustained several dog bites, including a significant injury to his arm. He was transported to a local emergency room for treatment.
Describing the encounter, Roberts recalled how one of the dogs latched onto him during the attack.
“He came running at me, jumped up and knocked me down,” Roberts said.
“[The dog] put his jaws on here and clamped.”
Medical professionals treated multiple wounds resulting from the attack.
“Two were the skin is scraped and bleeding, and the third was more of a puncture wound,” Roberts explained.
Because the animals have not yet been identified, doctors initially warned that post-exposure rabies vaccinations could become necessary if authorities are unable to confirm the dogs’ vaccination records.
However, Roberts was later informed that his coat may have prevented significant exposure to saliva, potentially reducing the likelihood that rabies treatment will be needed.
Owners Allegedly Left Scene After Attack
According to Dedham Animal Control, the women gathered the dogs immediately after the incident and left the area.
Officials say investigators are now working to identify both the owners and the animals involved.
Roberts said he was focused entirely on defending himself during the attack and was unable to observe much about the women or their reactions.
The incident has generated concern among residents who regularly use local walking paths and outdoor recreational areas.
Authorities Ask Public for Help
Dedham Animal Control has launched an investigation and is encouraging anyone who may recognize the dogs or owners to come forward.
In a public statement, officials urged community members who regularly use the trail to share any information that could help identify those involved.

“Anyone who may routinely walk this path and may be familiar with any of these parties as described by gender, age, and/or the accompanying dogs, is asked to please reach out to us.”
Officials also noted that surveillance footage from nearby properties is being reviewed as part of the investigation.
They encouraged the individuals involved to voluntarily come forward and cooperate with authorities.
Investigation Continues
As investigators continue searching for answers, Roberts remains focused on recovering from a traumatic experience that he says left a lasting impact.
The case serves as a reminder of the potential dangers posed by uncontrolled animals and the importance of following leash laws designed to protect both people and pets.
Authorities have not yet announced whether the dogs or their owners have been identified.
