Culver City, California — Newly released police video is shedding light on a dramatic and dangerous pursuit that authorities say left multiple pedestrians injured across Culver City after a driver allegedly struck people while attempting to evade law enforcement.
Investigators say the incident unfolded Tuesday evening and ultimately resulted in the arrest of Juan Luis Estrada, 45, of Perris, who now faces a series of serious felony charges.
The footage, released after the incident, appears to show part of the pursuit as officers attempted to stop the suspect’s vehicle while it traveled through city streets.
Video Appears to Show Teen Being Struck
According to authorities, one section of the video shows a white vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed before veering into a pedestrian crossing the roadway.
Police said the victim was a 19-year-old who was among several people injured during the pursuit.
Investigators have not publicly released detailed information regarding the extent of the victims’ injuries, but officials confirmed that eight pedestrians were struck during various stages of the incident.
The victims ranged in age from 15 to 70 years old, highlighting the broad impact of the alleged rampage.
Incident Began With Hit-and-Run Report
Police said the sequence of events started shortly before 7 p.m. after officers received reports of a hit-and-run collision.
Authorities allege the suspect struck one person before leaving the scene.
A short time later, officers located the vehicle after Estrada reportedly stopped at a gas station. During that encounter, investigators say three additional pedestrians were hit.
Police then initiated a pursuit as the suspect allegedly continued driving through the area.
During the chase, authorities say four more pedestrians were struck before the pursuit finally came to an end.
Pursuit Ended at McDonald’s Drive-Thru
The chase concluded when the suspect crashed his vehicle into a McDonald’s drive-thru area.
Officers then took Estrada into custody without further incident.
Authorities also reported that one police officer was injured during the events surrounding the arrest. Officials later said the officer was in stable condition.
Investigators continue working to determine exactly what happened throughout the pursuit and whether all of the collisions were intentional.
At this stage, police have not publicly announced a motive.
Police Say Community Was Put at Risk
Culver City officials described the incident as an extraordinary threat to public safety.
Jennifer Atenza, public information officer for the Culver City Police Department, said officers continued pursuing the suspect because of the immediate danger posed to the public.
“Recognizing the severity of this suspect’s actions and the recklessness and the danger he was putting our community in – that was why our officers continued to engage in pursuing him.”
She added:
“He clearly had no regard for human life on the road.”
The comments reflect concerns raised by investigators regarding the risk to pedestrians and motorists during the incident.
