Over the past few years, Jonny Griffis has invested millions of dollars in his legal marijuana farm in northern Michigan, which produces extracts to be used in things like gummy bears and vape oils. But now that farm — like many other licensed grows in states that have legalized marijuana — faces an existential threat: high-inducing cannabis compounds derived not from the heavily regulated and taxed legal marijuana industry but from a chemical process involving little-regulated, cheaply grown hemp. • The Detroit Office of Marijuana Ventures and Entrepreneurship has granted 37 marijuana business licenses, including the city’s first-ever consumption lounge.
• Majority of the 65 applications were approved for retail stores.
• 13 businesses are majority-owned by African Americans, five are majority-owned by women, and 21 have majority ownership by Detroit residents.
• This is the second round of licenses since 33 businesses were awarded recreational marijuana licenses in Detroit in 2020.
• Currently, 31 retailers are operating in Detroit with 10% state excise taxes, revenue to be distributed to the city next year.
• Provisional certificates were also granted to four applicants for consumption lounges and two for microbusinesses.
• Final approvals from Michigan are still needed before these businesses can open.

Detroit’s Office of Marijuana Ventures and Entrepreneurship announced on Tuesday that 37 applicants have been awarded licenses to operate marijuana establishments in the city. The licenses include retail stores, microbusinesses, and the city’s first-ever consumption lounge.

Out of the 65 applications received, the majority were approved for recreational marijuana dispensaries. One applicant was granted a license for a consumption lounge, which will be the first of its kind in Detroit.

Kim James, director of the Office of Marijuana Ventures and Entrepreneurship, praised the recipients for their potential and commitment to operating successful businesses while promoting diversity and equity goals.

Regarding ownership, 13 of the licensed businesses are majority-owned by African Americans, five are majority-owned by women, and 21 have majority ownership by Detroit residents.

This second round of licenses comes nearly a year after the initial 33 businesses were awarded recreational marijuana licenses in Detroit. The city faced legal challenges as it worked to establish an equitable licensing process, reserving half of the limited licenses for equity applicants.

Recreational marijuana became available for purchase in Detroit earlier this year, and there are now 31 retailers operating in the city. These businesses are subject to a 10% state excise tax, with the revenue to be distributed to Detroit starting next year.

Additionally, the latest round of licenses granted provisional certificates to four applicants for consumption lounges and two others for microbusinesses. These applicants have 18 months to secure a property with assistance from the city.

Overall, Detroit continues its efforts to expand its marijuana industry and promote diversity and inclusion within the sector.

The businesses awarded licenses still need to get final approvals from the state of Michigan before opening.
