Vijay’s Action-Thriller “Leo” Tops the Global Box Office, Beating Leonardo DiCaprio’s “Killers of the Flower Moon”

• Lokesh Kanagaraj’s “Leo: Bloody Sweet,” featuring Vijay, earned a global box office total of $31.2 million on its debut weekend, making it the third highest-grossing film worldwide and surpassing Leonardo DiCaprio’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
• The action-packed movie homages David Cronenberg’s “A History of Violence” and follows the story of cafe owner Vijay, played by Vijay, along with Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, and Madonna Sebastian in supporting roles.
• In the United States, it earned $2.1 million; in the UK & Ireland, it made £1.07 million ($1.3 million) over three days; overall, it collected an impressive $48.5 million within four days.
• This is the second collaboration between Vijay and Kanagaraj, who had previously worked together on “Master” (2021), which achieved a box office collection of $36 million. Other films include “Beast” (2022) and “Varisu” (2023), with similar box-office numbers to “Master.”

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s latest Tamil-language film, “Leo: Bloody Sweet,” featuring Vijay, made an impressive debut at the weekend box office. According to Comscore’s estimates released on Sunday, the action-packed movie secured the third spot globally, earning a whopping $31.2 million worldwide.

While Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” took the top spot with $44 million, and “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” came in second with $41.5 million, “Leo” showcased its strength when it comes to cumulative earnings among new releases. In just four days, “Leo” racked up an impressive $48.5 million, surpassing “Killers of the Flower Moon’s” $44 million.

Released on October 19, “Leo” pays homage to David Cronenberg’s 2005 film “A History of Violence.” The intense thriller follows the story of Vijay, playing a cafe owner with a violent past. The star-studded cast includes Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, and Madonna Sebastian, among others. “Leo” is produced by S.S. Lalit Kumar and Jagadish Palanisamy for Seven Screen Studio.

In the United States, “Leo” earned an impressive $2.1 million over the weekend, while in the United Kingdom and Ireland, it collected £1.07 million ($1.3 million) in just three days.

“Leo” is part of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s LCU or Lokesh Cinematic Universe, which includes other successful movies like “Kaithi” (2019), “Vikram” (2022), and the 1986 film “Vikram.” Fans of Kanagaraj and Vijay will be excited to see characters from “Kaithi” and “Vikram” making appearances in “Leo.”

This is the second collaboration between Vijay and Kanagaraj, following the success of their previous film “Master” in 2021, which grossed an impressive $36 million. Vijay’s popularity continued with films like “Beast” (2022) and “Varisu” (2023), both achieving similar box office numbers to “Master.”

Kanagaraj’s film “Vikram,” starring Kamal Haasan, was also a major hit in 2022, grossing $60 million in revenues. His upcoming project is his 171st film, featuring South Indian superstar Rajinikanth, and currently untitled.
