Amid rising living costs and industry strikes, Netflix is making a controversial move to eliminate its cheapest ad-free option. This decision affects several countries, including Australia, and has in criticism from loyal customers. The basic plan, priced at AUD$10.99 per month, will be phased out for new and returning users. However, existing customers who have already purchased this plan can continue.

In a letter to shareholders, Netflix justified its decision by citing improvements to its offerings, such as better video quality and a programming lineup equal to other plans. This change has increased the adoption of their ad-supported and standard plans in countries like the US, UK, Italy, and Canada. Next week, the same transition will occur in Germany, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Australia, and Brazil.

Moving forward, Netflix aims to enhance its feature set, including the introduction of downloads and the inclusion of the ads plan in device and ISP partner bundles. As a result, the standard plan, priced at AUD$16.99, becomes the next available option, offering additional perks like downloading and full HD viewing experiences. Alternatively, users can opt for the standard plan with ads at $6.99 monthly.

Unfortunately, UK, US, and French customers will face price increases for their Netflix plans.

Despite recent efforts to crack down on password sharing, Netflix recorded a staggering 8.8 million new subscribers. With such tremendous growth, one has to wonder if keeping the basic plan would have been a better choice.
