It’s a massacre spree that sacrifices storytelling coherency for glorified death scenes, but it works because the kills are so thrillingly fun. Think decapitations and brutal bodily bisections that will leave you on the edge of your seat.
The story revolves around Aim and Win, inseparable lovers, Tony the party boy, struggling actress Nan, and the sourpuss Chang. As they gather at a bungalow campground resembling a mix of a hostel and a hideaway, they become the targets of a masked killer in a bear costume. With secret romances, a murderer on the loose, and a dead friend, the night unfolds with a chilling sense of impending doom. Someone wants them all dead, and they’re hiding behind a fuzzy disguise that you’d see on the sidelines of a sports game.
While “Night of the Killer Bears” may have some storytelling flaws, its non-stop gore and suspense make up for it. Director Banjongphinij creates an environment filled with psychopaths, where any character could be the killer. The violence is random and shocking, keeping you guessing with each new death. Although the narrative may not be as tightly woven as some would prefer, the film’s special effects team delivers stunning, stomach-churning imagery. Heads are severed without looking away, and blades are gruesomely shoved through mouths, providing a visually exciting and revolting experience.
