The Redford Theater presents The Phantom of the Opera (1925) with Live organ accompaniment by Tony O’Brien Saturday, October 22, 8 p.m.

As we get closer to Halloween, it’s time for the Redford Theatre to get down to some more terrifying business. Join us for the original 1925 silent film version of the horror classic The Phantom of the Opera.

Silent movies were never meant to be watched in silence, so we will be using the magnificent Barton Theatre Pipe Organ as it was intended when it was built almost 95 years ago—matching what your ears hear with your eyes on the screen.

We will be presenting this film with the original color sequences intact, accompanied by the musical mastery of Tony O’Brien at the controls of the Barton. Tony is one of today’s prominent concert organists known for his historically accurate recreations of silent film scores. In addition to his theatre organ training, Tony has a degree in the classical organ. This combination of talents enables Tony to coax an extensive range of musical sounds from the organ.

Most notably, you will see the amazingly gruesome self-devised make-up that Lon Chaney (“The Man of a Thousand Faces”)  created for his starring role as the Phantom. He jammed cotton in his cheeks, glued back his ears, used rubber, spirit gum, and fish skin to pull back his nose, and flare his nostrils and egg film to cloud his eyes.

The reaction of Chaney co-star Mary Philbin when she first sees the Phantom unmasked is genuine. She had no idea what he would look like until that moment. That scene is also said to have made 1925 theater audiences scream and faint. (Gregory Peck’s earliest movie memory is of being so scared by The Phantom of the Opera at age nine that his grandmother allowed him to sleep in the bed with her that night.)

Until recently, much of the opera house set was still standing at Universal’s Sound Stage 28—the oldest interior film set in the world. Unfortunately, on September 23, 2014, Sound Stage 28 was wholly demolished so the property could be put to a different use. It’s believed that some of the set was placed in storage.

2014 is also noted as the year that the last living member of the cast passed away. That was Carla Laemmle (the Prima Ballerina). She was the niece of Carl Laemmle, producer and founder of Universal Pictures.

You will have just one chance to experience this entertaining classic film. The Phantom of the Opera will only be shown on Saturday evening, October 22, at 8 p.m. Tickets for this performance are $10.

You can watch the original trailer for the film here: https://youtu.be/HYvbaILyc2s, but you won’t see the Phantom” s face. By contrast, they were prohibited from showing it not to lessen the shock value for future film audiences.

Of course, the preview is silent, accompanied by piano, but you will have the opportunity to enjoy the artistry of organist Tony O’Brien on the Barton. It will be a scary evening, not to be missed.
