The Redford Theater presents Psycho (1960), October 21

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Halloween is right around the corner, so the Redford Theatre is amping up the scare level another notch.  On Friday, October 21, at 8 PM, we will be presenting Psycho, directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

Suppose you don’t remember, that film with the never-ending terror of the Bates Motel and the scariest shower scene ever. Filming that scene didn’t bother star Janet Leigh, but after watching it on screen, she never was able to feel comfortable retaking a shower. Co-stars Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles, John Gavin, and Martin Balsam ensure that you will forever be more selective about where you stay overnight during your travels.

Psycho is considered to be one of director Alfred Hitchcock’s finest films. He completed filming in just 30 days. Hitchcock placed his usual cameo shot near the film’s beginning to not distract the audience who might be looking for it. Watch for the man in the cowboy hat outside the real estate office.

Also, watch for his use of symbolism. For example, in early scenes, when Marion Crane (Ms. Leigh) is considered “pure,” her bra and purse are white. In later scenes, her bra and purse are black after she has stolen money.

Some side notes:
* Ted Knight, who later became well known for his role as the inept anchor man on the “Mary Tyler Moore Show,” has a bit as a prison cell guard (for which he was paid $150).
* Hitchcock chose to use Bosco Chocolate Syrup to represent blood because the movie was filmed in black and white. (Some moviegoers were so mesmerized by the film that they later swore they saw red—an impossibility.)
* the Cleaver family also used Marion’s ’57 Ford sedan in the “Leave it to Beaver” TV series.

Perhaps no other film changed Hollywood’s perception of horror films as did Psycho.  To view the most unusual movie trailer you are ever likely to see, click on the link to watch Hitchcock himself conduct you on a tour of the scene of the mayhem:

When the film was originally released, Hitchcock insisted that theater managers not seat anyone after the movie began. The Redford is not so strict, but you should be early anyway. You won’t want to miss a great organ overture on the Barton Theatre Pipe Organ a half hour before showtime.
