I met Kara M. Canton while working on a feature called “Sticks and Stones” for the Yunion – a Metro Detroit nonprofit that has a mission to counter negative cultural influences that misdirect the lives of youth by raising awareness and strengthening families through innovative prevention programming, education, parental engagement, mentoring, and counseling.
While working on the project I learned that Canton has an amazing eye and a wonderful spirit I knew I wanted her to be a part of anything I worked on.
As the Production Designer for “Why Me!?” she asked such great questions to help flesh out the world we created on screen. I can’t wait for you to see it.
Kara loves painting new worlds for characters to inhabit. Whether by the written word and location selection or set decoration and wardrobe choices, she enjoys seeing characters come to life. Kara finds inspiration in everything from nature and city architecture to opera and kayaking.
She credits her love of travel and adventure to her parents who hail from the Caribbean. Due to her father’s career, they moved frequently, resulting in Kara attending schools everywhere from Michigan to Kenya. It’s from this diverse exposure that she draws from, assisting her in also becoming an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker.
