Pat Morita, the Oscar-nominated actor best known for his role of Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid series, left behind a painfully revealing autobiographical record of his life. He contracted polio at a young age and was told he would never walk. His determination carried him through to the bright lights of Hollywood where he found discrimination and few roles for Asians. He was “discovered” doing stand-up comedy and brought something extra and memorable in every role. Deep inside the sweet, generous, multi-talented performer seethed an army of demons, that even alcohol and drugs could mask. This touching and thorough documentary allows us to learn who the real Pat Morita was through movie clips, friends and wives paying tribute and his own voice.

As the mural dries, a luxury condo building is approved by the City Council even though it will completely obstruct the art that portrays the vast cultural history of Oakland. The community of artists, dancers, activists decide to fight back. An inspiring, beautiful documentary that not only reveals the richness of Oakland’s diversity and arts but lays testament to the need to fight for what is valuable.

TUSCALOOSA

1972. Vietnam War protests and racial tension is sizzling the late summer hear of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Billy, a recent college graduate, spends the summer working on the lush grounds of an antiquated mental institution. His psychiatrist father runs it. Virginia, a patient, becomes the object of his affection and love without knowing if she is truly crazy or pretending. His best friend, Nigel, has joined a radical civil rights organization fighting against Tuscaloosa’s power elite and race-hating citizens, including Billy’s father. Billy is torn between his loyalty to Nigel, his deference for his father and the city’s cronies, and Virginia who plans to escape with or without Billy.
