 The opening night film for the 2019 Freep Film Festival will feature Boy Howdy! The Story of CREEM Magazine, “America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine.”  A monthly rock ‘n’ roll publication described as a  little more raw, a lot more street and a lot less hippie focused. CREEM was  first published in March 1969 by Barry Kramer and founding editor Tony Reay.

CREEM Magazine focused not on tedious Eagles and Grateful Dead articles. Instead, it was Iggy and Alice Cooper and Patti Smythe. It was punk rock before there was such a thing (in fact, the words “punk rock” first appeared in print in Creem.)  It was irreverent, snotty, and completely fearless. It was also the home of Lester Bangs, one of the greatest rock critics ever. The rest of the crew was no slouch, either.

This film rips back the curtain on  CREEM’s wild and disruptive newsroom; a dysfunctional band of unruly outsiders not that different from the artists they covered.

Tickets for Boy Howdy! The Story of CREEM Magazine start at $25 in advance and officially went on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 15, at the Fillmore Theatre box office and LiveNation.com.

Opening Night events, presented by Chemical Bank, will feature a VIP reception before the film that will be hosted by festival executives, and allow guests to mingle with filmmakers, dignitaries, on-screen talent and special guests. VIP reception tickets start at $55 and include early entry in the Fillmore, reserved VIP seating, food and two drink tickets. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the film starts at 8 p.m.
