So who is Alice Guy-Blaché? She is among the first people anywhere to make a narrative film. From 1896 to 1906, she was probably the only female filmmaker in the world. She worked her way up to leading one of the first studios, Gaumont, and later founded her own production company, Solax.
It is only fitting that Guy-Blaché is featured first in the Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers series, a collection of newly-restored and mostly unknown silent films by pioneering women in the industry. These are women who essentially created cinema, and who are now largely forgotten.
As the series continues, we’ll shine the spotlight on the daring, innovative, and trailblazing work of female filmmakers with a different program of new restorations with live music or newly composed and recorded scores will screen twice each week for the next four weeks. Among the other women featured are Mabel Normand, Lois Weber, Grace Cunard, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ida May Park.
