Attending middle school at Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, he transferred to the University of Detroit Jesuit High School for high school. He matriculated at Dartmouth College in the class of 1963, where he majored in theatre. After receiving his degree, he left for London, England, where he enrolled in the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art., after receiving a Fulbright Scholarship as a student of Stella Adler.
From 1971 Moriarty starred in a number of successful movies, like Bang the Drum Slowly (1973) and The Last Detail (1973), but his biggest success was to follow when he won a Golden Globe for his performance as the cruel, old, vicious Erik Dorf in Holocaust (1978) (a 1978 mini series), which also stars James Woods.
He is, however, most widely acclaimed for his role in Law & Order (1990), Ben Stone.
