According to Francis Ford Coppola telling of his making his 1972 classic, The Godfather, the experience was “nightmarish.” Hired to direct Mario Puzo based movie, the studio gave him a hard time on nearly every decision during production. Now, HBO Films is producing a script dramatizing the havoc behind the scenes.
Entitled Francis and the Godfather by Andrew Farotte, the script made the 2015 Black List of best unproduced screeplays circling Hollywood. It details what went on behind-the-scenes of the Mario Puzo adaptation starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and Diane Keaton to Coppola dealing with the real life New York mafia.
Produced by Echo Lake Entertainment, Mike Marcus, Doug Mankoff, and Andrew Spaulding will serve as executive producers on the film. Peter Bart, who as an executive at Paramount first optioned Puzo’s novel and worked closely with Robert Evans and Coppola, will serve as a consultant. The project is part of an ongoing push into television by Echo Lake.
Coppola’s epic won three Oscars – Best Picture, Best Actor (for Brando) and Best Adapted Screenplay – and is considered to be one of the greatest films of all time. “The Godfather” was also credited as having been a breakout for Pacino.
Presently actors are being auditioned to play the many actors who originally starred in the masterpiece.
Coppola revisited the The Godfather movie’s production last year, releasing his massive production notebook based on his experience in making this movie.
